Not too long ago, KhanKidory posted some scans from a German magazine called "Good Times" on BowieAudio.

Amongst the images was this one:

As far as I thought, this was the first ever image we saw of one of the German TV shows.

But then Paul Kinder posted these, in which he is wearing the same shirt.
Note, however, that the Background is different, and that in the German picture Bowie has his shirt buttons loose, whereas they are Buttoned up in the Van der Stam pictures.

Which were taken at the same time as a few photographs by Nico van der Stam, which I discovered in a Dutch Archive a while ago:

I will do more research into this and revisit the archive after I finish my thesis, but for now I am glad that the German picture has appeared :)

Could it be that the other pictures were taken in the Netherlands? Currently there's an exhibition of photographer Nico van der Stam in Alkmaar. According to the website

http://www.cultuurarchief.nl/tentoonste ... r-stam.htm

Van der Stam took most of his pictures in the Netherlands.

On a side note: the picture on page 53 in Bowie Style is also taken by Van der Stam. According to the caption it was taken during the concert at Paris Studios in London, but I sincerely doubt that. If it was taken in the Netherlands, at which show could that have been?

Take a look at these images, the resolution is incredible!

Yes, I know :)

I've held the originals and the Negatives in my hands! And there are quite a few more....

I have indeed been told that Nico van der Stam also worked in London and I suspect that the 1969 photos were indeed taken there - which means that the 1970/71 photos might be from a Top of the Pop performance with Peter Noone instead of the supposed Eddy Ready Go performance.

The 1967 ones should be *Fenklup*

The detail in these psots is amazing. I was once capable of sharing details like this about album numbers, bootleg tapes and the like but my memory is not that good now.

In the final photograph of ArdentDesire's brilliant post Bowie strikes a very similar look or gaze to the photographs on the front and back of his first album cover (Deram ~ 1967).

I think the London Boy CD uses that final photograph or one taken at almost the same time. (Spectrum 551 706-2), 1995 (UK). Bowie is smiling on the CD cover. Your thoughts?

Cheers

John

It is definately the same session, but I previously thought it was the exact same picture. Now that you mention it I notice they are slightly different, note the smile and the hair in front of Bowie's left eye for instance. Good spotting!

That CD cover makes an excellent addition to this thread :) Indeed the photographs were taken seconds apart, it seems.

Could be possible that these 60's pictures where shot during the recordings of "Fanclub" a Dutch popshow.
Bowie was there in November 1967 as can be read in the Ken Pitt book.

That could very well be - but the background of the first image seems to suggest the 4-3-2-1 show, and Bowie looks quite similar in the pictures. With things like this it's hard to tell, and sadly we might never know.

I have been emailing the Dutch Director of the programme and he couldn't remember much ... called Bowie " a silent , quiet shy boy of whom much was expected."

I'll try to get more info out of him with regards to the Fenklup pictures.

Cool - he should at least be able to tell us if the decor in the pictures is that of 4-3-2-1 or not. We should then hopefully be able to determine from what show(s) the pictures stem.

Yes, I have just mailed him again with the three pictures and asked him.

He just mailed me back and told me :

( I had asked him if there was any material left, be it footage or photographs)

"Nee helaas, geen materiaal
en de foto's zeggen me ook niets.
Antwoorden liggen te slapen in
het videoarchief van Het ZDF_Mainz.

Vriendelijke groet,
Bob Rooyens"

So he drew a blank on the photos, which is unfortunate.

next stop is Mainz, I guess.

Pity - though we couldn't expect him to go "here, have a dvd with broadcast quality footage of all the performances" of course.
Still - that he didn't recognize the quite striking decor of the Nico van der Stam pictures would suggest these weren't taken at 4-3-2-1 I guess?

Yes, although it is a shame he gave no comment whatsoever about the First picture I included, the one purportedely taken at the 4-3-2-1 show....

I vow to get to the bottom of this ....

But that may take a while ;)

Can anyone save the bottom 3 pictures in high resolution?
I would love to have larger versions of these great tv pictures.
