I've heard of someone who tried to rip the SACD version of Heathen and it had an extra "track" on it, but there's no music on it...
probably some data information or something like that.

you could try this program.

http://www.wildbits.com/tunatic/

it basically listens to a song and identifies it.

Hey christian

That was sooo obvious I couldn't see it.
Now why didn't I think of that ages ago?

Downloaded your little software programme, but haven't got a microphone at the moment.

Next time my daughter pops by I'll try it with her blackberry as that has one of those apps on it.
And wether it comes up as Marlyn Manson mix of Britney spears or unidentified I'll let folx know?

Hi Folx !

Tried to identify the track via a Blackberry app and from my friends PC using attfield's software (thanx att) and got a couple of trax which upon searching were not the track.

Upon 'discrediting' those trax on both the Blackberry and attfields software programme it came up as *unidentified*.

Hmph !

Next plan of attack is to have to go out and buy some CDr recordable discs which I'll probably never use again then connect my old stand alone CD recorder into my music system (Which is like trying to connect into a telephone system) and record a sample for you folx to tell me it's so and so's remix of so and so. :P

Any answer is better than none.

PS Could still be "All The Spoils Always Delight"

I hope that that I have solved this for you.
I used my Linux mint system using "Audio cd extractor" and ripped my Heathen disk and I ended up with a track ripped from the cd called "Heathen-00-Hidden track.mp3" the next track that I ripped was "Heathen-01-Sunday.mp3"
I have never heard of this Hidden track before, but I did read about a Buddha in suburbia hidden track and it sounds like this era. BUT the track is repetitive and is only 3.09 long, doesnt really sound like bowie and sounds like the words. "Return, for the life"
this track has defiantly came from heathen.
it also has a line "Return for the good"

I put the song on the net

here is the link

http://www.toofiles.com/en/oip/audios/mp3/davidbowie-heathen-00-hiddentrack.html

The song track says "David Bowie and DJ Lace"

I still cannot believe that this came from heathen, so I am going to do some more searching and testing.

Hi b0r0

Read your post and thought "Yes! I'm not going mad" and came on to thank you after beng told that there was no secret track on 'Heathen'.

Mysteriously the track you ripped from the CD is not the same track that I recorded which makes the mystery even stranger, but at least you proved there is a secret track on some discs?
(Is that the sound of everyone ripping their Heathen CDs I hear? )

My track is as described and is 3.29 secs long and I'm still sure it's Bowie.

Maybe instead of factory workers scratching secret messages alongside the matrix number they are now recording secret trax on CDs?

Thanx

Well I now have my doubts about the file I uploaded, as I tried re creating the same ripping but failed, BUT!!!!! There is something there, here is a picture of proof.
the data that is there is (to what the website says) only compatible with win 95 and win 98, I have neither of those.

the data on the disk is enhanced windows stuff and it looks as though they may be a song there too.

I did rip off the enhanced windows files but I had a error on one of the files, so I will try again, maybe I can get them off or someone could try using win 98 or 95.

I can find nothing on the cd that states there is enhanced extras.

hopefully we are getting to the end of this and/or someone else already knows what the extras is.

Heathen is an Enhanced CD and the data you can see is a software music player. The software doesn't contain a hidden track, it plays the CD tracks. Excluding Japanese releases, you'll find that many (if not most) of Bowie's albums, released since 1999, are Enhanced CDs. It really is quite normal, nothing special.

Hi Folx!

With the passage of time, the knowledgeable comments here and the strange anomoly that it is I started to doubt I'd recorded an extra track on my stand alone recorder, when I was 100% certain when I first posted.
Spoke to my ex of the time yesterday who has a better memory than me and she confirmed that I'd recorded the track as said and recalled how I spent hours trying to record it again.
So even although folx are rightly thinking there's no secret track or whatever it is on Heathen I now know without doubt I recorded this extra track directly from my Heathen disc.

The only doubt that I have is to what it actually is?
Folx may be left with the doubt about where it came from which is your perogative I only know I have no doubts.

I'll try and record a segment as soon as I'm less busy and post it for folx to make up their own mind to who or what it actually is.

And of course I tried sticking the disc in my PC and got the same info you guys have posted in your screen grabs and the 'read me' page.

Not hidden as such, but there is a 30 second gap between the last two tracks. I think it was done that way as "Hang On To Yourself" doesn't really belong on the album. It was first added to The Daily Mail giveaway to promote Santa Monica Live.
