Peace on Earth, can it be?

It's not hard to track down audio or visual recordings of David Bowie and Bing Crosby's wonderful 1977 performance of Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy.

However, next month (November 9th) sees the release of the song as a limited edition red vinyl 7" 45 single, albeit with a slight title change to: The Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth. The single will be backed with a 1953 Bing Crosby/Ella Fitzgerald duet of White Christmas.

As if that wasn't enough, a restored version of the original Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas TV broadcast, (which the Bowie/Bing performance first aired on) is also being made available on DVD at the same time: BING CROSBY: THE TELEVISION SPECIALS – Volume Two: The Christmas Specials.

And, just to complete the set, the duet will also be part of the up-coming CD release: BING CROSBY: THE CROSBY CHRISTMAS SESSIONS.

Read all about it over at bingcrosby.com and pop over to ccmusic.com where you can snaffle the lot up in one fell swoop.

Nothing too exciting, but the single might be nice - and I'm not sure, but I guess the DVD would contain Heroes from the Bing Crosby show as well?

I wonder if there would be a chance of this being a better quality recording of the song.

"all meticulously restored from the original film and videotape sources and presented with all original performances intact" - from the DVD description at collectors choice music.

Heroes should be included then, but we'll have to wait and see. it's not clear which country the 7" originates from, did i miss something?

Well, I don't know, I already have this CD: http://www.amazon.com/Peace-Earth-Little-Drummer-Boy/dp/B000001J79/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1286633221&sr=1-6, which is pretty good, I think I'll pass...

Is that really the cover for the vinyl? It's blimmin' awful. Like someone had 10 minutes with Microsoft Paint to throw something together.

What's with the change of name for this song?

Does that mean the IdbD will have to have a new entry?

I guess this famous performance was a live vocal over a pre-recorded backing track, rather than the two of them miming?

David and Bing met for the first time on the morning of the taping of the show, rehearsed for an hour and finished their duet in only three takes. Really not sure if the music was pre-recorded or the orchestra was hiding behind the Christmas tree :-)

For those who have not already ordered the standard edition of the dvd.
There will be also a special edition set which contains a cd as well with the famous duet on it.
And at a lower price than the standard dvd only edition.

This is now also released as a digital EP. From BowieNet:

In the old Illustrated record book, it states that there was a bootleg single of Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth and it was backed with "Heroes". Was the version of Heroes on this boot, the version from the actual broadcast? Does anyone know?
Also, is there a digital source of this version of "Heroes" anywhere. I used to have it on an old C90 cassette with other rarities, but it was lost years ago.

Yes, the bootleg 7" has the TV version of Heroes, I just played it to make sure.
As posted above the DVD release will have Heroes as well, so there will be an official digital source of that performance.
