Rebel Rebel original single vs album version comparison samples here. (avoid clicking on numerous advertising download links!) sample 1 is the intro (note percussion absent over opening guitar riff on the single mix, and how the album mix has more reverb). sample 2 reveals separation (note the more defined acoustic guitar in the right channel of the single mix and the little percussive moment at 7 seconds, absent from the album mix). sample 3 shows a much clearer "won'tcha" and "oh!" on the single mix. sample 4 shows the added reverb effect on the single mix after each "how could they know?", absent on the album mix. the single mix fades early but has no other edits. the single mix has yet to receive an official digital issue.

Alan, also these numbers are printed on the obis of the three editions, respectively: 96-8-2, 99-1-21 and 99-4-20. Do you know what the numbers indicate?

not alan, but these will be deletion dates. the two dates for 97/99 would suggest a change in tax requiring a price adjustment.

Miracle Goodnight CD single. The scans have been reversed and the "compact disc maxi single" is the German pressing.

Remove dead links as suggested by Alan; add Mott compilation Ruud den Ouden.

A suggestion for the A to Z song entry for "Aladdin Sane" Just picked up the 2 LP "Special" Japan RCA SRA-9503-4 and for only £10 so well happy. On the The vinyl albums discography Shooky states that "Aladdin Sane" is slightly shorter due to an early fade. Does this count as an edit to be added? viewtopic.php?f=80&t=1151

MATT DAY wrote: On the The vinyl albums discography Shooky states that "Aladdin Sane" is slightly shorter due to an early fade. Does this count as an edit to be added? the same applies to the earlier issue of this LP, "Best Deluxe". the "problem" with listing these as edits is that there are several others out there and the main reason for such edits is to fit them onto an LP side of vinyl. IMO this separates them from "genuine" bespoke edits made for singles and/or radio play. i also listed a South African AS recently and that fades the tracks at the end of each side. it's down to poor cutting so doesn't really warrant a "unique edit" label. it is unusual for the quality conscious japanese to make such an edit, so perhaps it is deserving... but personally i think of early fades as the laziest and least interesting edits (see also Golden Years, Life On Mars?, "unique" Brazilian Let's Dance single edit etc etc). perhaps if ruud wants to take this further, an "authorised" vs "unauthorised" edits list could be compiled?

If these edits occur on officially released albums I think they deserve a mention in the IdbD. Yes, they are a grey zone but if they are spotted why not add a short line to the song's entry? Any edits spotted, please drop them here (may be as a link to another topic)!

Just been looking on Ebay and found this Spanish RCA Promo LP which claims to feature a Mono version of Starman? Maybe a suggestion for the A To Z tracks or Vinyl Discography? Does anyone have this to verify its contents? Hope this is of interest. | eBay Link: Select | | http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=271091462729 |
Here are the details from the listing. “CAPISSIMO” - “Volumen II” RARE original RCA Records very first MONO press released in Chile in 1972 by RCA Records, catalog number CML-2931 and matrix numbers: CML-2931-A EB-CC in Side 1 and CML-2931-B EB-CD in Side 2, with rare white RCA labels. The songs in this exclusive RCA compilation for Chilean market are: Side 1: 1 Safari Salvaje - Barrabás 2 Si Supieras – Maria Esther Lovero 3 Cindy – Tony Blackburn 4 Que La Dejen Ir Al Baile Sola – Rubén Mattos 5 Tonight - Donald 6 Playas Somnolientas – Roberto Inglez Y Su Orquesta Side 2: 1 Vacaciones De Verano – Roberto Inglez Y Su Orquesta 2 Es Mi Chica Favorita – Raúl Padovani 3 Popcorn (Palomitas De Maiz) – Viva La Música 4 Palabras, Palabras – Silvana Di Lorenzo Y Osvaldo Brandi 5 Dulce Sissi – Quique Villanueva 6 Starman – David Bowie It’s very interesting to see that most of song titles are in Spanish, except “Tonight”, “Popcorn” and “Starman”, but they are translated to Spanish in both back cover and labels. The only exception is David Bowie’s “Starman” which’s written in English only. And maybe this song is the great find in this record, because it’s a bit different to the style of the other songs in this compilation, and mostly because this is a MONO version!!! WOW!!!

Staman in mono can be found with relative ease - it's on the original US, Australian and NZ singles and the Portuguese EP, and probably on releases from other "exotic" locations where stereo was late to take off. i haven't heard this LP so don't know which mix/edit this might be, but if it's the soft album mix it might be considered marginally more interesting but will almost certainly be a fold-down and not a dedicated mix.
