Hi Ray and welcome to the IdbD forum.
I suspect our regulars are already watching the Missing Episodes forum for updates, but please do remember us when you have something to report. The TOTP Jean Genie is a legendary performance for 1000s of Bowie fans and we've been waiting a long time for it to turn up.
Just on my way to read your column. I'm also a fan of classic BBC radio and I'm very grateful for the efforts of everyone involved in the Missing Episodes project.

As to who legally owns this footage, and whether or not said person allows it to be broadcast remains to be seen, (fingers crossed it doesn't go anywhere near a certain NY legal team) but having said that, yes, things are certainly looking rosy. I assume the footage was recorded at the BBC's TOTP studio's in Manchester

Some bands were filmed in Manchester (I'd haul drum kits and other bits hired over to them - whilst my dear Dad would collect the footage for the London flight that same day, keep it in the family lol) your quite right, London was TOTP's home, my confusion lay with the Harry Goodwin connection, the Manchester based official TOTP photographer (from 64 - 73) in fact it's Harry's Photo that we all associate with the missing JG footage (the one with the BBC camera in shot) It's great to think that the Beeb will be coming 'home' soon

I too, hope we get to see this again... I was lucky enough to see it at the time, the lasting memory for me was seeing bowie shaking his maracas, as a 12 yr old I didn't know what they were...

An update from saintsray on the Missing Episodes forum: Quote: Some more info on the Jean Genie progress. This is written by John Henshall:-
""First I went with Richard Turley, a producer from the BBC, to Westpoint Television, a company which specialises in playing and copying very old broadcast video tapes. It was an amazing spine-tingling experience when David Bowie performing 'The Jean Genie' live on 'Top of the Pops' in January 1973 came up on screen in superb broadcast quality. It was the first time the tape has been played for over 38 years. It is 'rarer than rare' to quote Ray Langstone, who heard me mention that I have the recording when I was on BBC Radio 2's 'Johnnie Walker's Sounds of the Seventies' a couple of months ago####. It seems that people have been searching for this recording, on which Bowie played live, for years without success. Until now! The BBC wiped their tape after the original broadcast and there is no other version. Why do I have it? Well I was a young cameraman at the time and used one of my Telefex Fisheye lenses on my camera. I'm even in shot myself! So I went down to VTR and asked them to make me a copy – on 2-inch broadcast videotape. No VHS in those days. The picture shows Richard Turley and David Dean transcribing the tape at Westpoint Television this week.""
There is a picture of John in the studios as mentioned. Before you ask - it doesn't have any still/pic of the performance on there.""
#### I am aware Mark Wardle, and then Laurence spotted the Sounds of the 70's piece before me!!!! Obviously I have spoken to John a fair bit on email, phone and social networking an awful lot, hence the mention of myself! Good news all around - it is indeed Jean Genie, and it is in broadcast quality! It is now in the hands of the BBC, who are transcribing the tape. After that it is of course a question of when we will get to see it - which might be a while. But I can't imagine the BBC will let a find like this disappear into the archives again!

I see my post reached the Forum before I did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The BBC are aware - and someone at the BBC is definitely aware. Can't say who, but they are someone involved in the showing of Archive footage at a high level.
They were the one I informed about the Stealer's Wheel footage, that the BEEB didn't know they had and was subesequently broadcast this year.
Apparently, DB's management in the US may know too, but that is not something I have been involved in.
Regards, Ray.
