so now we have two people with conflicting Bowie quotes.
beckenham says "'fridge' was always thought to be a mis-print in the official lyrics... And although I can't find a reference to it now, even Bowie said it should be 'bridge'"
and simong says "It's a play on Beyond The Fringe, Peter Cook's original comedy revue shows in the 1960s. I've heard or read an interview where Bowie talks about this reference. Can't remember where or when though!"
It seems we haven't gotten anywhere.

'cause bowie's never told conflicting stories about his music before, right? he's always told journalists whatever he's felt like at the time, and i'd take it all with a pinch of salt.

NEW_MODEL_No.15 wrote: so now we have two people with conflicting Bowie quotes. I see no conflict. I was talking about the thought to be official (previously accepted) line on the word "fridge" in the Young Americans' lyrics. simong was responding to Blackbeards post and simply mentioned that the TV show title "Behind The Fridge" is a deliberate corruption of an earlier TV show title "Beyond The Fringe". Bowie is known to be a "Pete & Dud" fan and I've also heard him talk about them in the past. NEW_MODEL_No.15 wrote: It seems we haven't gotten anywhere. You may be expecting too much there. It's been a mystery, and the subject of many debates, for the past 30 years and we're not going to solve it here in only 24 hours!

shooky and beckenham - I guess my tone wasn't communicated well. I was commenting as much on the two conflicting member's recollections of Bowie quotes as I was on Bowie's quotes, and I certainly didn't think the mystery would suddenly be solved! I was simply saying the mystery continues...

I didn't interpret simong's comment as a confirmation that Bowie said "Behind The Fridge" was borrowed from the TV show, hence my comment above. You clearly do.
simong?

Yes, I interpreted simong to be saying that Bowie claimed to use "behind the fridge" as a reference to "beyond the fringe" (an argument for "fridge" over "bridge")

NEW_MODEL_No.15 wrote: an argument for "fridge" over "bridge" Apologies in advance if I'm misinterpreting comments again, but I thought we had already accepted that it is "fridge"?

my whole point was that you had said "'fridge' was always thought to be a mis-print in the official lyrics... And although I can't find a reference to it now, even Bowie said it should be 'bridge'" I interpreted that to mean that you thought it was "bridge"

I did actually say earlier in the thread that I can clearly hear fridge.

Well, then I am sorry, I definitely misunderstood. (that is nearly a whole page of useless back and forth!)

Very bad news regarding the reels. Apparently Bowie's lawyers have stepped in and requested the reels to be returned. The four excerpts we have now may well be the only thing we'll get...

it might be good news, if it means the person who had the transfer will now put it online as it is no longer something off of which he can make money.
