Hi all,
i've been getting into radio discs lately
i already have the ABC supergroups 3LP which has ( i think) 24 songs

but what i'm really after is a pre-fm source of the shorter broadcast which has Golden Years/TVC 15/Breaking Glass/Stay etc
so which radio disc has these songs?
the broadcast can't have been after 84 since it came out on that 4 LP bootleg box in 84
any help appreciated

also does anyone know the source for the swinging pig cd, and whether it was put through the dreaded "no noise" treatment

best regards
tim

I collect radio show discs and I've never seen those tracks on CD. My earliest Montreal '83 CD is a DIR/King Biscuit broadcast from 1999 which contains only a handful of pre-FM tracks. Premier Radio Networks broadcast more tracks in 2003, but they're sourced from vinyl, possibly the ABC LPs as the DJ mentions "Supergroups".

DIR Broadcasting King Biscuit Flower Hour July 5th 1999.

Segment One: Intro (Fashion in background) / Advertisements
Segment Two: Cracked Actor / Ashes To Ashes / Space Oddity / Band Intro / Young Americans / Advertisements
Segment Three: Life On Mars? / Sorrow / Fashion / Let's Dance / Advertisements
Segment Four: Jean Genie / outro
Segment Five: Fashion excerpt

Premiere Radio Networks September 22nd 2003.

Segment One: Look Back In Anger / Scary Monsters / Rebel Rebel / Heroes / What In The World / Advertisements
Segment Two: Life On Mars? / Sorrow / Fashion / Let's Dance / Red Sails / Advertisements
Segment Three: China Girl / White Light White Heat / Station To Station / Advertisements
Segment Four: Cracked Actor / Ashes To Ashes / Space Oddity / Band Intro / Young Americans / Advertisements
Segment Five: Cat People / Fame / Star / Advertisements
Segment Six: Jean Genie / I Can't Explain / Modern Love / Outro / Advertisements

I believe the Swinging Pig release is also sourced from the ABC LP's, but I don't know if the recording was tweaked for CD.

Thanks Alan,
interesting

my supergroups 3LP (broadcast date 5th nov 83) matches exactly the 2003 broadcast you describe

someone on dime also torrented a broadcast that went : Ashes To Ashes/Space Oddity/Life On Mars?/Golden Years
the rest of the broadcast was glass spider tracks

it's not uncommon for radio show CDs to mix and match incomplete sets. as just one example, there's a Westwood One Superstars Concert Series CD that has six tracks from the Phoenix Festival '96 followed by ten from Tokyo '90.

I can certainly see why you're asking if other pre-FM tracks from the shorter broadcast made it on to CD. It also made me wonder, so I checked my concert compilation discs and cue sheets to make sure I haven't missed something. No luck though, they're nowhere to be found. If nothing else, it might suggest that only some of tracks remain in pre-FM quality. It may also explain why King Biscuit was happy to rebroadcast the Glass Spider concert numerous times and not this one.

Anyone know if Wolfgang's recordings are pre-FM or from vinyl?

As far as I'm aware (certainly the ones I've listened to) the Wolfgang's Vault recordings are from pre-broadcast master tapes, some of them freshly mixed from the multitracks and longer than any previous source or broadcast.

Thanks Simon,

Not unexpected, but you do have to wonder why King Biscuit didn't broadcast more from these concerts in the post vinyl era.

What's the best-sounding version of this show available today? I have the 2 CD SERIOUS MOONLIGHT put out by Swinging Pig in the 1990s, which sounds quite good; has a better source emerged since?

Thanks.

I was told (after i started this thread) that the swinging pig set is still the best source, they got a dub from the KBFH master reel and got themselves in a load of trouble for it

I've just managed to get hold of the Swingin' Pig set and it does sound very good, much better than my previous source which was Montreal Connection.

Oh yeah -- I had that one, too. Really inferior to Serious Moonlight. Between Serious Moonlight and the Glass Spider DVD/CD combo, there's no reason to hang on to The Montreal Connection now.

Speaking of which, I found myself eating in a restaurant attached to a generic-looking mall/movie theater in downtown Montreal last fall. A coworker mentioned, in passing, that it was the site of the Montreal Forum until 1996.

The show with Golden Years/TVC 15/Breaking Glass/Stay etc: were on UK radio in 1984. It was from a vinyl radio lp I used to own along with the King Biscuit double lp i bought from Record Collector the same year. These were compiled on the 1989 Stoned Records Montreal bootleg on 3x CD set.
Cds 1 and 2 have the longer american show from the 2 lp radio set and disc 3 is the single lp radio show as broadcast in the UK in 1984. The other four Montreal tracks are taken from the Glass Spider Premier 4xcd show. The shows presenter looks back at Bowie's last tour and plays four tracks in the build up waiting for the Glass Spider show to start. The first Moonlight tracks broadcast from CD if I remember right.

Many thanks for mentioning that, I'd totally forgotten those tracks are hiding on the Glass Spider Tour Special discs. Definitely the first Moonlight tracks broadcast from CD because the 1987 Glass Spider Special was also the first Bowie radio show distributed on CD.
