Not sure how significant this is, but I just picked up a VA DualDisc (CD/DVD) released by Sanctuary back in 2001 (here in the states), called "British Are Coming". Here's the complete track listing:
1. Love Potion No. 9 - The Searchers 2. Catch the Wind - Donovan 3. In the Summertime - Mungo Jerry 4. Pictures of Matchstick Men - Status Quo 5. Tossing and Turning - The Ivy League 6. Here Comes My Baby - The Tremeloes 7. He's in Town - The Rockin' Berries 8. Baby, Now That I've Found You - The Foundations 9. I Dig Everything - David Bowie 10. Reflections of My Life - Marmalade 11. Sugar and Spice - The Searchers 12. Silence Is Golden - The Tremeloes 13. Take a Heart - The Sorrows 14. Colours - Donovan 15. I Put a Spell on You - Alan Price Set 16. Telstar - The Tornados
The DVD side contains 5.1 Surround Sound versions of the tracks. I haven't yet heard it, but suspect this is an exclusive mix of this track.
I reviewed the forum and didn't see any previous posts mentioning this.
I was vaguely aware of a DVD release, but I didn't realise it contained a 5.1 remix. Also a little surprised to discover they could create a 5.1 mix from such an old recording. If you can play it, please let us know what it sounds like.
Thanks.

Definitely significant.
Yeah, really.
Like ... who's really looking for Mungo Jerry's "In The Summertime" in 5.1 Surround Sound??!
But I had to score this, I was intrigued. I'll post my thoughts once I get the chance to hear it ("I Dig Everything", not "In The Summertime"!)
LOL You probably do have to be a 50 something Brit to fully appreciate Mungo Jerry
Actually, I don't mind "In The Summertime" ... I remember having that on a KTEL record when I was, maybe, 10! I meant, in Surround Sound, though ... !
Watched the clip of "Alright ...", though, and that was GREAT! I really liked the drumming on that tune, too -- very cool! And the video - - was excellent! Takes me back to when I would crank up a new XTC UK single (of which I STILL have a complete collection of!) when they would come out.
Very nice, thanks for that!
BTW, I STILL haven't checked out the DVD yet ... will do so this weekend.

it only just occurred to me that this track was recorded in mono... so the 5.1 would have to be some modern equivalent of the dreaded electronically processed stereo unless they unearthed multi-tracks.

That's what's so bizarre about this whole dual disc package! ALL these tracks are old, from the mid-late sixties. I would expect many, if not most, of these tracks are in mono. The best I'd expect is that some were recorded on 4-track multitrack.
I haven't really studied the packaging yet -- maybe there are details there that will help define the point of this release! I'll definitely get the chance to review it all this weekend.

My original Beach Boys Pet sounds album was in mono. It was remixed into 5.1 a number of years before the stereo mix was released. I can understand them doing that, but there would be some expense in remixing tracks to 5.1, so it is strange they'd pick a relatively obscure Bowie track. Space oddity would have been a better choice for this album.

The album was first released on CD in 2001 and they only have the publishing rights for the original tracklist. All low cost songs for a cheap to produce compilation.

Just a quick post to say I DID finally get to hear the 5.1 "Surround Sound" mix (my quotations...)
Can you take a guess at what they did?
Sure enough, Shooky was right. This was full mono in the two front speakers; all they did was add a bunch of reverb and put that in the back speakers.
It really is practically pointless to include that track, at least for a surround sound mix.
Now, "In The Summertime", on the other hand ... Loved it when the car started up and drove away. Moved from the right-rear, around the right front, and to the left front! That was actually pretty cool! (yes, I'm easily entertained...)
Oh well, at least it confirms they can't create good 5.1 mixes from old mono recordings.
Many thanks for doing this for us Gary, it is appreciated.
I have a feeling you'll also love the train in the new Station To Station 5.1 remix

Alan,
Glad to have contributed SOMETHING...!
Also, just found out I "dodged a bullet" concerning my employment ... <whew!> ...
And seeing that Barnes & Noble is selling the Deluxe Edition of STS for 117.40 with free shipping, I can't find an excuse NOT to get it. So, for sure I'll hear the train a comin' ...
