I've been re-listening to Starman again and noticed there is a slight difference between the original RCA fade out and the Ryko fade. On the original, there is a guitar part that is played during the la la la la section. It is played on every 9th bar on the RCA version, you can just hear it repeated right at the end of the fade. On the Ryko version, the fade goes half a bar longer, but the guitar part is missing.
Following are the lyrics on the outro as sung by Bowie. Sing along with it to keep your place whilst listening to the song.
I have highlighted where the guitar come in to make it easier to follow. The newer anniversary version of the Ziggy Stardust album misses the last part of the fade altogether.

i can hear the one at the very end of the fade (which is also on the original album), but i don't hear a difference elsewhere...the Ryko is missing that last one, yes. the EMI'99 has it at the very death of the fade. incidentally, the German RCA CD fades the track early and ends just as that phrase would be played.
Ok so it looks like it is the RYKO mix that is different. They've intentionally removed the guitar right near the end.

looks that way, yes. it wouldn't be easy to remove it unless they had access to the multitracks. that last guitar phrase should butt up to the start of It Ain't Easy, just as the end of Ziggy Stardust should with Suffragette City (30th Anniversary fades this too). maybe the engineers at Ryko and on the German RCA CD thought it was untidy and chose to revise to their liking.
