Quite a nice release I think...

EMI TO ISSUE JIOD 7" 40TH ANNIVERSARY PIC DISC

"I'm moving,touch me!..."

Following the success of the Starman 45 in April, EMI will mark the John, I’m Only Dancing 40th with another collectable 7” picture disc.

... JIOD was originally released on September 1st, 1972. This new anniversary disc will feature that original single version on the A-side and what has come to be known as the sax version (an energised re-recording made during the Aladdin Sane sessions), on the AA-side.

Here's the release information for the new disc...

Release date: Sept 3rd – World excluding US
Release date: Sept 11th - US

A side: (matrix no: DBJOHN 40A)
John, I’m Only Dancing (original single version) (2.48)

AA side: (matrix no: DBJOHN 40AA)
John, I’m Only Dancing (sax version) (2.41)

The images chosen to illustrate each version fit nicely with the dates too.

The A-side has a still from the Mick Rock directed promo video filmed during rehearsals at The Rainbow just a week prior to the original single issue release date of September 1st, 1972. .

The AA-side has one of Sukita's more beautiful portraits of Bowie (aren't they all? http://bit.ly/SpeedOfLife ), taken at Radio City Music Hall in February 1973, just three week's after the completion of Aladdin Sane.

Both sides of the disc are illustrated below along with one of the original music press adverts for 1972 tour dates and the JIOD single.

The advert also features a Sukita shot from his first session with David in 1972, most likely the very first published shot of David taken by the photographer. A huge blow-up of the same shot also gazed down from the balcony of the Rainbow foyer for the August 19th/20th shows at the venue.

We will be running a contest to win copies nearer the September 3rd release date and UK fans can pre-order here http://bit.ly/MVFJHL

nice and as simon g suggested to me a while ago, the jean genie would make a nice companion to the starman disc as both a single mix and a TOTP performance are available... let's see if EMI are thinking along the same lines.

Yes, I thought the same. A potential Jean Genie single practically designs itself as well - pic from the promo video on the a side, pic from the TOTP recording on the flip (the fisheye lens shots are already round, perfect for a picture disc!) :)

I just noticed the dead link says these are 2012 remasters. Interesting - and strange they didn't include at least the 1972 take of JIOD on the Ziggy 40th release, seeing it was a non-album a-side from the same period...

Interesting. Looks lovely.

Does this mean he is still with EMI?

Hopefully this will be easier (and cheaper) to obtain in the US than the "Starman" 7-inch.
