This item is presently on eBay.

The listing:

"DAVID BOWIE Rebel Rebel/Fame - ULTRA RARE JAPAN 7" ACETATE (TEST PRESS/PROMO)

Here is an ultra rare Japanese 7" acetate from David Bowie featuring "Rebel Rebel" on the A-side with "Fame" on the B-side - a unique pairing of tracks.

This came from a Japanese Radio Station and is probably a complete one-off test pressing - a superb find for collectors.

It is in very good/ex condition - great for such an old acetate disc."

Looks like the 80s equivalent of a CDR...

I wondered if it was a white label pressing of one of those numerous 7" bootleg singles that were issued in the mid to late 1980s however I cannot remember one with a Rebel Rebel/Fame combination.

Which versions of Rebel Rebel and Fame I wonder?

there are dozens if not hundreds of these acetates out there. Ruud is correct with his '80s CD-R analogy, but they are "official" depending on how you view such things. they were cut by USEN, Japan's music licensing body. they were provided to radio stations etc when required, usually pairing two hits and occasionally two different artists. versions are invariably standard LP versions and some are quite sloppily put together. a complete copy would include a library card taped to the sleeve with a USEN number, date of order and genre. they exist for many artists and seem to have been produced until around 1986. value is very much down to what someone is prepared to pay.

NB: the age of the tracks is irrelevant. it is not uncommon to find tracks of different vintage on the same disc, so don't assume this example was cut in 1975.
