Rebel Rebel is next 40th Anniversary Picture Disc

“Looks like you've been there too”

Rebel Rebel is the next release in the continuing run of David Bowie limited edition 40th anniversary 7” picture discs.

The record will be the seventh in the series, due to be issued by Parlophone on March 10th, with the usual regional variations.

Originally released on February 15th 1974, Rebel Rebel was a first taste from the upcoming Diamond Dogs LP, though it was considered a bit of a curveball compared to much of the music on that album.

It was the first release since the dissolution of The Spiders From Mars, though stylistically it may have been more at home on Aladdin Sane, with its up-tempo, Stones feel and with an unmistakable and instantly recognisable riff played by Bowie. A riff that he was more than grateful to have conjured up, later saying of it: “It's a fabulous riff! Just fabulous! When I stumbled onto it, it was 'Oh, thank you!'”.

The track reached #5 on the UK singles chart and even managed a placing in the US Billboard Hot 100, no doubt helped by the US version of the single released in the US, Canada and Mexico in May of the same year.

The A-side of the 40th anniversary edition features the original single mix of Rebel Rebel, which hasn't been available on 7" since the early 80's and sadly remains unavailable on CD to this day.

The AA-side has the aforementioned US Version, which is a remixed edit of the song with overdubs and extra backing vocals, more akin to the version Bowie would play on the North American Diamond Dogs Tour that year.

The photographs on the disc were taken of Bowie while in Amsterdam promoting the single and recording the Rebel Rebel video for the Dutch Top Pop television show in February 1974.

The original UK single version of Rebel, Rebel was broadcast on BBC radio this morning and you can listen to it by scrolling forward to approx. 47:40 on the BBC iPlayer:

BBC iPlayer

This is the the intro revealing that the recording had to be remastered from an original 7” single because the master tape has been lost.

*** No longer available ***

Ah yes that's the one - the difference is night and day, happy memories dancing (posing) away to this original back in the day, thanks for the link Alan - now a future legend on my Audacity (And red, mutant eyes gaze down on AudaCity)

Is the AA side the shorter different version @2.58 released and withdrawn in the USA in 74, the master tape being lost and this pressing sourced from a copy of that withdrawn vinyl single. How rare is the original 2.58 version?

No, this is the original single version. The US remix has been released on many compilations.

Of little interest to most I'm sure, and apologies in advance (I realize it's not news ) but I hope some might enjoy my little film which is both a tribute to this song and the Manchester clubs we frequented back in the day. (all none David footage and stills are of Manchester - I'm in there somewhere :) )

The A side is the original/UK single version. The master tape is lost and it had to be remastered from an original 7” vinyl.

The AA side is the US single version. It runs approx. 2:58, it was the only US single release and it was released three months after the original/UK version. The master tape isn’t lost and the audio can be found on the Diamond Dogs 30th Anniversary bonus disc and CD2 in EMI’s Sound+Vision box. Assuming my memory hasn’t let me down again, the various Best Of Bowie 2002 track lists are wrong and that one isn’t the US single version.
